Forum 21 was formed locally in 1998 and is a voluntary group based in west Somerset dedicated to raising awareness of environmental issues and climate change. It takes its name from the Agenda 21 movement which came out of the United Nations Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992.
Agenda 21 was a non-binding action plan of the United Nations with regards to achieving global sustainable development into the 21st century throughout the world. Implementation was intended to involve action at international, national, regional and local levels and Europe certainly embraced this, with Sweden’s contribution being outstanding. Until recently the USA was on board but the current Republican administration has rejected Agenda 21 as ‘erosive of American sovereignty’, although the Democratic senator, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others are energetic champions of the Green New Deal in the United States.
The principle aim of Forum 21 is to support our community in achieving a sustainable western Somerset, by living within our environmental limits whilst developing a good quality of life for everyone. It comprises a group of individuals with a range of interests, skills and knowledge and a common commitment to live within the Earth’s means. The group’s main objective is to continue initiating and facilitating community-based projects and actions by generating ideas, finding funding and seeding new projects.
Anyone sharing our aims is welcome to join the group. Join up and feel part of a global, living organism ensuring there will be a future for generations to come.
Make the whole greater than the sum of its parts!
Membership is free.
